CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ilsa watched in fascination as Julie sipped from a huge steaming coffee mug. “Coffee and chocolate brownies for dessert? Are you ever going to sleep again, Julie?” The elf princess laughed.

Julie laughed. “At least I’ll stay awake on the drive home.”

Ilsa took a bite of her brownie. The cafeteria was packed with people at this time of the evening, mostly recruits or soldiers or agents in blue uniforms. Julie noticed Kaplan sitting at the far end of the room, plowing through steak and potatoes, and wondered if he ever went home.

“Where do you live?” Ilsa asked.

Julie sipped again. “Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, in a cool little apartment.”

“Brooklyn!” Ilsa frowned. “Is that a rough neighborhood?”

“Some of it, I guess.” Julie grinned.

“Sorry.” Ilsa shook her head. “I think my royalty is showing. I’ve seen more of Avalon than Staten Island, and I live here.”

Yeah, under lock and key. Julie didn’t say it. “I’ll have to show you around sometime.”

Ilsa’s smile crinkled her brown eyes. “I’d like that.” She stretched. “By the way, Tay, my ribs really sting where you got them this morning.”

“Sorry, sorry.” Taylor laughed. “We won’t talk about my lower back. I think you threw it out.”

“Don’t be a wimp, bro.” Ilsa patted his hand. “Hey, Julie, want to spar with me tomorrow morning? I could show you those moves with the daggers.”

Julie smiled. “I’d love that.”

They finished their dessert, Julie drained the last of her coffee, and Ilsa headed to her suite with her guards. With caffeine crackling through her veins, Julie had just about enough energy to shuffle back to the elevator and hit the button for the medical unit.
